Last week, Friday 21st October, our group of San Diego students took a daytrip to Assisi and Perugia. Despite a few grey clouds, the rain held off and it was a great day.
Its over 100 miles to Assisi from Florence, so it was an early start, leaving at 7.45am.
On arrival we were greeted by the energetic Francesco Vignaroli, who said (with a smile of course) the best thing about Assisi is you get a great view of Perugia (his home town).
We spent over an hour in the famous Basilica dedicated to St Francis, admiring the works by Cimabue and Giotto. Francesco also told us about the famous earthquake in 1997 that destroyed parts of the town and the Basilica. You can see a Youtube clip of the damage here.
The tour carried on outside before we were all given free time to explore on our own and of course discover that all important lunch spot...
Then is was time to retrace our steps back to the coach and Perugia. As luck would have it the Eurochocolate exhibition was taking place in the heart of the city. Hundreds of chocolate producers, large and small were displaying their products throughout the city.
First we had to get there... Perugia is a living, working, city on the top of a hill. As we were on a large, private coach we had to take the Minimetro from the coach park.
As always, the view from the top was worth it.
Anne Wolf, the professor took some of the students on a little tour of some of the Etruscan features of the city, whilst the rest of the students explored the chocolate festival. Even the rumours about Chocolate Kebabs were true...
A great day out. Thank You to Anne Wolf for many of the pictures, you can see a link to her Shutterfly page on the right of this page.
