Capodanno Fiorentino

Happy Florentine New Year!

In Medieval times the feast of the Annunciation (25th March) heralded the start of the New Year in the city and many Florentines would go and attend Mass in the church of Santissima Annunziata to celebrate.

Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian Calendar in 1582, making 1st January the start of the year.  However, Florentines held on until 1750 before falling into line with the Popes wishes.

Today the city honours its past with a parade and special Mass.

Luckily the parade went past the School Building in Piazza della Repubblica, so various Students were able to catch a glimpse of what life might have been like centuries ago...

You're never far from a Giglio in Florence.

Students wait patiently to study the parade.
